Management of Information Agencies. Concepts of management applied to libraries and information systems; management tools, programming, models and simulation in an environment of an information producing or disseminating agency.

Social Constructs of Information. The focus of the course is to examine how information has become a distinguishing feature of the modern world. We will discern the complexities of how information and society reflect and shape the other and to what extent a globalized information society is emerging. Central to this exploration is the relationship of libraries and other information agencies to the state and what role informational professionals might play in the political and cultural spheres.

Intellectual Freedom and its Discontents. Intellectual freedom is very frequently held to be a fundamental value of librarianship and it is to be defended above all else in our organizations. That is a very strong claim that must be examined closely. Intellectual freedom has to be defined in theoretical and practical ways so that the most complete understanding of it is possible. This course involves delving deeply into the conception of intellectual freedom and the ways it can be defended in practice. It is a very complicated idea that is sometimes honored in the breach in our libraries. Collections, access, and services are all affected by how we define this freedom. As we will see, nothing about intellectual freedom is simple. The course will address the topic in principle and in practice.

Libraries, Literacy, and Social Justice. Study Abroad. Libraries are forces for social change. This course is designed to help students understand literacy needs and other social and economic challenges that libraries can address. Readings cover local, national, and global impediments and solutions. Course was conducted for two weeks in England and Scotland.

The role of evaluation of personnel, budgets, access to information, and services is integrated into the process of providing services.
